The GLSA Home
Imagine a home away from the hustle and bustle where our orphan girls can be raised in a safe, secure and beautiful sanctuary?
The quiet suburb of Lakeside is one such place in Cape Town, South Africa.
This is an aesthetically beautiful and spacious home with all the amenities that would easily and comfortably
accommodate 40+ girls and their caregivers.
It is situated in close proximity to public and semi-private schools, as well as public parks, beaches, hiking trails and
even a bird sanctuary and lake.
In addition, the home incorporates green living in the form of solar energy, a borehole with a water filtration system,
surrounded by trees, vegetation and a mountain range in the backyard.
Child & Youth Care
According to the criteria set down by the Department of Social development, this facility would be registered as a Child and Youth Care Centre ie level 2 Residential care, with the prescribed protocols, norms and standards being adhered to.
Our goal is that this facility will be a centre of excellence and a benchmark for Residential care in South Africa.
Our aim is to implement the highest standards in Governance, monitored closely by an Executive Board. Key to the success of the project is sound Financial practices, ensuring transparency through the services of qualified bookkeepers and Chartered accountancy audits, and sustainability through researched fund raising models. The facility will be manned by skilled personnel /caregivers who will be carefully screened and trained. Sound labour practices are crucial to operational efficiency in the home.
• Particular to this model is the ratio of caregivers to children (1:8), the inclusion of a resident nurse and the services of social workers, psychological counselors, clinical psychologists, life coaches, occupational therapists etc.
• Emphasis will be placed on life skills programs which address the emotional and psychological challenges common amongst these children.
• On a physical level, their motor development, fine motor skills and social interactive skills are developed under the supervision of an occupational therapist, and through the introduction of sporting activities like silat/karate, archery, horse riding, and swimming. In addition, they will receive instruction in IT/ computers, creative art and crafts, calligraphy and cookery.
• The girls are to be enrolled into reputable schools ensuring that they receive a quality education. This will equip them intellectually to face the world with confidence, implementing the tools and skills they have mastered to live a purposeful and productive life.
Strong mothers of strong leaders.
• Their spiritual development is of paramount importance as it is the cornerstone of developing good character, respect, integrity and accountability. To this end, a special space will be allocated in the home that will serve as a sanctuary for prayer, meditation and well as a library. This is where in-house religious studies, spiritual instruction, group talks and workshops will be held and the prospect of sharing information with girls from other homes may be explored. Sharing is caring.
